KBRN, Yogyakarta: Several tourist destinations in Yogyakarta, including Tamansari, were crowded with visitors during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
According to Tamansari Tourism Manager Ridwan, the number of visitors during the holiday period increased compared to regular days, though it was slightly lower than last year’s holiday season.
“The surge in visitors occurred after Christmas, on December 26 and 27, decreased on the 28th, and rose again on the 29th. Meanwhile, on Christmas Day itself, the number of tourists was relatively low,” Ridwan said on Tuesday, December 30, 2025.
During the year-end holidays, daily visitor numbers exceeded 4,000, with some days reaching 5,000. This figure is double the average on regular days, which typically see around 2,000 visitors.
Overall, visits during the Christmas and New Year period were relatively stable compared to last year, with only a few hundred fewer tourists. However, annual visits to Tamansari increased compared to 2024.
“There was only a slight decrease of a few hundred during the holiday period. Annually, visits have increased compared to 2024, while the ups and downs during Christmas and New Year balanced out,” Ridwan explained.
He also noted a significant rise in foreign tourists. During the holiday season, the number of international visitors exceeded 200 per day, compared to fewer than 100 previously.
Ridwan highlighted a shift in tourist demographics. While group visits dominated last year, this year saw more individual travelers and families. “Family visits are increasing now. Many families are coming, perhaps because of the school holidays and the government’s work-from-anywhere policy. This is very supportive of tourism,” he said.
Tamansari, a palace garden complex of the Yogyakarta Palace, was built in stages during the reign of Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono I in 1758. Covering more than 10 hectares, it contains 57 structures, including bathing pools, suspension bridges, water canals, an artificial lake, a mosque, and underground passages.
Ninik, a visitor from Jakarta, said she brought her children and grandchildren to Tamansari to learn more about its history. “It’s great. We didn’t really understand Tamansari's beauty until now. After entering the complex, we realized how beautiful it is and that it deserves to be preserved,” she said.
During the year-end holidays, the entrance fee to the Tamansari tourist area remained unchanged at IDR 15,000 (approximately USD 0.90) per person. (Misni Parjiati/Lasti Martina)
